Our First Congregational Church of Falmouth, Massachusetts of the United Church of Christ was originally gathered on October 28, 1708. Previous to that, the congregation worshiping in Falmouth had been considered a “branch church” of the Puritan church in nearby Barnstable, which was originally gathered in 1616 in Southwark, England.
Falmouth’s first meeting house was built in 1700, or earlier, near the Old Burying Ground off today’s Mill Road in Falmouth. A second larger meeting house, near that site, was completed in 1717. Continued growth of the town led to that meeting house being moved and rebuilt by 1756 on that portion of the original Meeting House Lot which was then laid out and called the Village Green. That meeting house was replaced in 1796 with a fourth building in the style of a church, erected on the same site. In its steeple, a bell made by Paul Revere was placed. That bell continues to ring out over Falmouth. Its inscription reads: “The living to the church I call, and to the grave I summon all.”
Reverend Jonathan Drury feels he has been actively pursuing God’s call to Christian ministry since he was in adolescence. Jonathan studied cultural Anthropology and Comparative Religion at Bates College and then attended Andover Newton Theological School where he received his Masters of Divinity degree. He was called to serve South Church in Andover as Director of Youth Ministry in 2002 and completed his call at South Church as Associate Pastor in June, 2012.
Jonathan views himself as a compassionate person, a good communicator, and a hard worker. He models his love for people on the love demonstrated by Jesus Christ, and has always felt called to care for folks who appear to have been carelessly disregarded or marginalized by the world. Jonathan approaches his ministry with humility, and recognizes he is called to bring people’s attention to the Gospel. He tries to do this in his life by sharing the good news of Christ’s story and by helping folks to recognize the presence of God’s Spirit all around them.
Mrs. Martha Evans oversees our busy church office. Martha came to Cape Cod, and to our church, in 1992 from Laramie, Wyoming. Her educational emphasis was in vocal performance and she has a Bachelor of Music in Voice from the University of Wyoming and Masters of Music degrees in Voice and Opera Production from Florida State University. Martha has an adult son and daughter.
Mr. John J. Dulina, IV, is the Director of Music and the conductor of all of the choirs at the church. Mr. Dulina has performed and conducted across the United States, Canada, and Italy. Formerly the Music Director at Sacred Heart Church in Southbury, CT, under his direction, the Adult Choir was invited to sing in Rome Italy for a public concert a high Latin Liturgy and in particular for Pope John Paul II. His talents cover a wide range of music from Gregorian Chant to contemporary compositions. He has conducted and performed major works of the masters including Bach, Handel, Haydn, Mozart, Vivaldi, and Stainer.
John also currently serves as Artistic Director and Conductor of the Greater Falmouth Community Chorus.
Mrs. Laura Cole is an active member of the First Congregational Church of Falmouth. She has an Associate Degree in Human Services, a Bachelor's Degree in Psychology/Sociology and has done Graduate Degree work in Public Administration and Gerontology.
Laura has an exceptional understanding of facilitating, organizing, and co-ordinating programs. Caring for others and providing resources with enthusiasm and compassion is her calling.
James Rowland, a "wash-a-shore" since the age of three, grew up in Hyannis. He oversees the maintenance of both our large church building and expansive grounds. With an educational background in the culinary arts (hence "Chef James"), his extensive experience in property management and mechanical systems ensures that our church puts its best foot forward to the Falmouth community.
Danielle Dallis of North Falmouth is a Cephalopod Culture Operations Specialist at the Marine Biological Laboratory in Woods Hole, meaning that she maintains octopuses, squid and cuttlefish and works on relevant research related to the cephalopod breeding program. She mentors undergraduates at the MBL and serves as an experienced resource for volunteers and interns. She will keep her current job as she takes on this new position with us. Succeeding in multiple jobs at the same time is nothing new to her.
Danielle has also worked as a Teaching Assistant and a Long-term Substitute in the Barnstable Public Schools, and as an Intern Coordinator at the Cape Cod Museum of Natural History in Brewster. She holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Marine Biology from the Maine Maritime Academy (2006) and a Master of Science in Environmental Policy, which she earned in 2018. Her life's journey includes her baptism in the United Methodist Church, an upbringing and education in the Roman Catholic Church, attendance in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, helping with bake sales at the Greek Orthodox Church, and now to us.
